The Protection Principal
Exposure is inevitable. Harm is not.
The Protection Principal
How the Psychological Protection Plan and the philosophy behind it.
Framework: The Psychological Protection Plan
The Psychological Protection Plan is a proactive framework designed to help people understand what keeps them well, recognise what makes things harder, identify the support they need, and take action before they reach crisis point. It creates a shared understanding between individuals, leaders and organisations, helping to ensure support is considered before it is needed most.
Philosophy: The Protection Principal
The Psychological Protection Plan is the framework. The Protection Principle is the philosophy behind it.
If exposure can be anticipated, protection should be considered before it occurs. The goal is not to wait for the cumulative impact, or for someone to reach their breaking point. The goal is to put protection in place from the very begining.
Exposure is inevitable. Harm is not.
Mission: Protecting people begins before breaking point
Protection is most effective when it happens before someone reaches crisis. Rather than waiting until people are overwhelmed, struggling or unable to cope, psychological protection focuses on recognising needs early, understanding individual circumstances and putting support in place proactively. It is about creating the conditions that help people thrive, not simply responding when things go wrong.
Belief: Exposure is inevitable.Harm is not.
Many professions involve unavoidable exposure to trauma, grief, vulnerability, conflict and emotionally demanding situations. The presence of exposure does not mean harm should be accepted as inevitable. By understanding risk, building support and applying the Protection Principle, individuals, leaders and organisations can reduce the likelihood and impact of harm whilst continuing to do meaningful work.
